Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) needed to refresh their outdated waste signage. Students (and faculty) were ignoring the informative stickers on the bins. After a tour of our local Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), and in collaboration with the VCU Office of Sustainability, I developed new ones which were clearer, cleaner, more informative, and even a bit more accurate.

Not just directional, but educational.

Part of the strategy behind the redesign was to include a more robust package of signage and stickers to call out common mistakes in waste separation. We made sure —through crystal clear visual communication — to educate VCU Rams on plastic bag disposal, coffee cup disposal, and resources available to them.

The stickers and signage have contributed to less waste in the landfill, and more recycling the MRF than previously.
